Call & Speak Against “Hate Crime” Bill H.R.1913

20 April 2009

I recently received a forwarded email. I don’t like forwarding emails in general, especially political emails, but this one has a phone number with it, which I have personally called and expressed an opinion against the bill to my congressman’s office, and they have recorded it. I encourage you to do the same.

HISTORY AND EXPLANATION OF THE BILL

This is a 1997 bill that is being reintroduced to Congress with additional language (in bold) like:

- “The incidence of violence motivated by the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability of the victim poses a serious national problem.”

- “IN GENERAL- At the request of a State, local, or Tribal law enforcement agency, the Attorney General may provide technical, forensic, prosecutorial, or any other form of assistance in the criminal investigation or prosecution of any crime that… (C) is motivated by prejudice based on the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity…”

From my understanding of it, this means that those who commit violence against people with a certain nationality or lifestyle fueled by a bigotry of that sort, are able to be prosecuted and jailed. This type of bill is superfluous to the laws already established, and really seems to be part of the agenda seeking to raise “alternative lifestyles” to the level of gender, race, and nationality.

- You can read more about the bill on the govtrack.us website
- Or on the THOMAS (Library of Congress) website (Type in “h.r. 1913″, select “Bill Number” and hit “Search”)
- Here is a news article that breaks the bill down a bit

OPINION

As Christians we believe that it’s wrong to commit violence to anyone, including those who lead “alternative lifestyles.” But we still must say and believe that it is wrong, because ultimately it harms and leads the person who is participating in that style of life away from the love of their creator. This bill is seen as being one step closer to prosecution of those who simply “speak out” against that which is wrong.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Here’s how to speak out against it:

1. Call: (202) 224-3121
2. Give them your zipcode so they can transfer you to the appropriate congressman or congresswoman’s office.
3. Tell the office that you’d like for them oppose the bill H.R.1913 when it is voted upon here very soon.
4. They’ll ask for your name and mailing address to validate your opinion.

Again, I encourage you to pass it on if you feel so inclined.

UPDATE: You can also email your appropriate congressman at this website.
